Iguana Love Sock

How To Create A Love Puppet - Sock Monster

Love Puppets - Socks

An iguana sock monster, love puppet or luv sock, depending on what you call it, is geared toward transferring your iguanas pent up aggression and frustration on something other than you. This page describes 2 simple methods for how you can make a sock monster for your green monster. Both of these methods utilize products many people already have around the house.

I prefer the sock monster over the traditional luv sock primarily because of cleanliness and reduced impaction risk. The sock monster doesn't include any small objects and can be cleaned without issue. The luv sock includes rice or dried beans and since both absorb water, can't be cleaned like the sock monster can. Unlike the luv sock however, the sock monster isn't designed to be warmed in the microwave.

The Sock Monster

Materials List

1 Pair of Dark Green Men's Socks (Winter Socks Are Great - Color Is Optional*)
A Few Old Shirts or Towels
A Draw String or Shoelace
Scissors

Assembly Instructions

The first step is to take one of the socks and place it inside the other sock. have found that the easiest way to do this is to simply place your hand in one sock and then put the other sock over it as if you were trying to wear 2 pairs of socks on your hand. I prefer to cut my stuffing up with the scissors before I fill the sock. If the towels or shirts are small enough, I guess you wouldn't have to. If they aren't, cut them up into manageable sizes. Once you have your stuffing ready, fill the sock with it. I prefer to stop at 2/3 of the socks capacity so that a "tail" can be made. Now that the sock is full, take it in one hand by the "tail" and swing it around a few times. The gravitational pull will force it toward the front and help solidify the creature you are making. Now take the drawstring and tie off where the stuffing ends. This will keep it from sliding out of the end. Now tie off sections off the remaining "tail" so that it looks like the picture below. If you have enough drawstring or shoelace left you could even tie off a separation to help define a "head" to your sock monster.
That's it! Your sock monster is now complete, is machine washable and can be repaired in minutes if the iguana manages to get any of the drawstrings off!

The Luv Sock

Materials List

1 Pair of Dark Green Men's Socks (Winter Socks Are Great - Color Is Optional*)
1 Bag of Uncooked Rice or Dried Beans
Sewing Machine or Needle & Thread
Microwave (Optional)

Assembly Instructions

The first step is to take one of the socks and place it inside the other sock. have found that the easiest way to do this is to simply place your hand in one sock and then put the other sock over it as if you were trying to wear 2 pairs of socks on your hand. Now you need to fill your sock with either the uncooked rice or the dried beans. You can fill the entire sock if you like to make sewing a bit easier or you can stop it 2/3 of the socks length, like we do with the sock monster, so that you could also create a tail. (This would also create reinforcement to stop spillage if the primary seam let loose.) Unlike the sock monster, you don't want to swing this around. You actually want to refrain from packing the rice or beans too tight. If they are packed tightly the luv sock won't be soft or squishy. Now you need to sew it closed so that the stuffing doesn't spill out. You should make several passes while sewing this to ensure that there is a strong seam. The rice and beans are both impaction risks if they are ingested.

This method allows you to warm the luv sock in the microwave. You will need to experiment with the length of time you microwave it. You want the stuffing to be warm and easily held with your hands so that it doesn't pose a burn threat to your iguana.

I wouldn't advise tossing this in the washing machine because of the rice or beans. When your iguanas season has ended I suggest ripping out the stitching and emptying the contents. Then wash the socks and refill it with fresh stuffing for the next season.

After sewing the end shut I decided to wrap a white shoestring around the remainder of the sock to create a tight "tail". The rice inside this luv sock is still very pliable allowing for the sock to be twisted, turned and shaken.

Be Creative

Sometimes the simplest things work the best. A rolled up towel that is tied on each end may be all you need. An old sweater or towel is sometimes more than enough for your iguana to attach itself too. A stuffed animal is often readily accepted. You could also do variations of the sock monster and luv sock. Be creative. When thinking up ideas, try to keep in mind that the iguana can and will eat what it can fit in its mouth. It's best to not add eyes or other small objects to these love toys because they are not going to be handled gently and the likelihood that such objects would come off is pretty high.

* Darker greens and blues appear to be more attractive to iguanas, though many have had success with the generic white socks as well.
